After about a year, and a very strong nod to the first issue’s cover art, Avenger’s Arena comes to an end.
Note: beware of spoilers.
This series overall was rather good. I thought a few times it slowed a little, and it seems almost as if Hopeless made a bit of a nod at that himself in some of Arcade’s lines. After all, Hopeless had to spend some time introducing who his new characters were. More time had to be spent breaking them, getting these (mostly) heroes to a point where they would be out to kill each other. Also have to admit with the recent Hunger Games, and other battle royale stories before that one, Hopeless had a fight on his hands to keep this fresh, and overall he managed. He pulled out some interesting death’s, and a few twists as well.
I do think this ran a little longer than it should. Spent a little too much time introducing the many new characters (a decent portion who ended up dying anyways), and in one case didn’t give an older character a more worthy death… Well it was a good run. And one that Hopeless brought to an end before it really started to drag on (like some comics out there that like to think they are “Superior”). There is a question out there on who exactly lives. What will become of those who did (it does seem X-23 has jumped to All new X-Men)? For that matter, what the hell happened with Hazmat’s powers, and why was Arcade keeping (some dead, and some still alive) contestants in a lab after they were out of the fight?
Like X-23, I hope to see some of these characters show back up in other comics. But beyond seeing where some of them go, and maybe an answer to Hazmat’s issue, I doubt the other will get explained. Overall this is a good read that is mostly handled well, and the full set should be available in a few trade issues soon for those interested. Pick it up.
Note to readers, if you come across Hazmat, Nico, or Cammi in any of the comics out there please let me know. I’m interested in seeing specifically what happens to those characters.
