Its only been this issue, and a couple before it, that things really have started to move. That the action has started moving, that things are happening. And of course with a story line like this has, that means deaths. Lots of deaths. And a central villain that is currently armed to the teeth. All of this is really causing things to look bleak now for the “heroes”. After all, I at least went into this hoping for most these characters to come out alive. For Nico, Mettle, X-23, etc. to find a way to beat this so called game and all (or most at least) come back alive.
Not happening. While the first few issues mainly got around to showing us character interactions, and spending time introducing us to the six new characters… Well they never got around to teaming up and finding a way to beat this game. Not with most of them still in tact at least. Sure most tried, but a few weren’t going for it. Neither was Arcade with his seeming total control of the island as he’d set things up to try to push them into fighting. And eventually those deaths started to pile up. Mostly with those newer characters, or ones who didn’t get much time (excluding Mettle who was rather big in Avengers Academy). Its to be expected out of this story, and Hopeless has been going at it pretty hard recently. As to be expected too though with some of the deaths he has brought about, well people are going to be mad. And like that article points out (or rather, one of the quoted Tumblr posts), it seems Hopeless is playing favorites in who lives and dies.
Hopeless kills off one of the bigger names he is working with, while one of the bigger threats to the arena villain is left alive when there was a perfect chance to kill them. But it could just be plot holes too, just to move things as he wants. After all one character who dies was brought to a perfect point to be killed off just an issue earlier. One that was completely ignored. If this character inside the arena is really out to win this game and go home, you think they would just kill when they got the chance to kill someone, not let them live so they can put up an actual fight and then die.
This… Well this is a tough one really. Hopeless is starting to pull off a really bold comic here by killing off some big names. Well, kinda big names. These characters are what? C-listers and lower? Even so, a few are recognizable and have a big enough fan base that this will (and already has at least to a small degree) cause some uproar. Its bold which is nice and respectable, but is it too bold?
