Review: Injustice Gods Among Us #1

While this may be leading towards a Mortal Kombat video game, its worth the look even if you don’t plan to get the game.

While I will try to avoid them, there still may be spoilers.

To start, for those who don’t know, Injustice Gods Among Us is a video game.  Well, it will be soon once its finished and on the shelves.  Made by the same people who make Mortal Kombat, it should hopefully be a fun game and in a similar style.  I just hope it’ll be better than the DC vs Mortal Kombat game.

Anyways, this comic is to tell the events that lead up to the game.  Why things are… well where they are during the game.  This first comic is an interesting read though.  Not being tied into the mainstream universe, well they can get away with a lot of things that otherwise probably would not be touched upon.  Like deaths.  I won’t state names, but this first issue brings in character deaths.  Sure it starts off pretty calm and loving, but the stakes really ramp up near the end when Joker makes his entrance.  If you want to see the fall of some iconic DC characters along with deaths and other things that often don’t happen in the main universe, this comic is the perfect choice.

Before closing this though I will add in a comment about some of the voice talent for the upcoming game.  Tara Strong will be Harley, who use to play Raven in Teen Titans and Harley Quinn in Arkham City.  George Newbern returns for Superman again (Justice League and various other cartoons as Supes).  Flash is Charlie Schlatter (Flash in Superman Animated Series, The Batman, DC Lego games).  Susan Eisenberg for Wonder Woman (WW in Justice League cartoon).  Hal Jordan from the recent Green Lantern cartoon via Josh Keaton.  Probably best of all though is Kevin Conroy as Batman once again!

Really, we have much of the Justice League cartoon’s main roster reprising their roles.  Most those who aren’t from that series are reprising roles from various other cartoons!  That and add in Nightwing will be in this game and how the comic has been after one issue, well it should be a fun ride.

About xxadverbxx

I'm a fan of comics. I use to love DC, but events pretty much starting with the New 52 had pushed me off of them for years. Lately though titles like Gotham Academy and We Are Robin have brought me back to them. I'm much more still a Marvel fan though at this moment who I moved to since New 52 slowly kept pushing me away from DC. Often a fan of X-Men titles while I've really been loving Spider-Gwen series. Film wise I'm upset at DC though I really really want them to do good. At least their TV series are mostly enjoyable (though Arrow has dipped in quality), while I'm a huge fan of the Marvel films. Also, I still really hate Dan Didio and still view him as at least most of what has been going wrong with DC comic wise lately.

  1. Yeah I was surprised by the comic and thought it was an interesting lead-in to the game. I am interested in seeing how they explain why Superman/Wonder Woman are underpowered and can be taken on by Batman, etc. They mentioned there was a good explanation that makes sense. All in all the game looks great. Wish I wasn’t broke so I could check it out. Worth a look for the voice cast alone.

    • Sounds like you’re a big fan of the old DCAU cast like I am!

If you’re low on funds right now though, it wouldn’t be too shocking if a trade comes out once all the issues are done. They did it for the Arkham tie in comics that helped explain how Arkham City got set up after all.
