I should have gotten to these a week ago, but they sadly melted into a pile of papers and cards on my desk until now. As for why I’m going through these out of the blue, I’m really not sure, but it probably has to deal with my recent run through of Ultimate Spider-Man volume 1, curriosity, and a general wonder how Steve will take to a new Spider-Man…
Expect some spoilers…
To start off, I dove right in with the new Spider-Man and rather disapointedly ran into Steve running the same song and dance that he went through before he was meant to train the original, while Tony quips back Steve’s life story. I thought Steve was an ass the firs time around with how much he pushed against Parker being in uniform. Luckily for me, Steve has some better reasons now and decides he wants to meet the new kid.
This issue deals with past things, so if you’re pretty recent to Miles, it may not fully make sense despite Bendis doing a pretty good job of summarizing it in the issue without clogging things down. After that a small bit of action comes up and then a guest appearance that is rather rudely interrupted by Rogers, coming off like an ass yet again.
My next jump was over to X-Men being I (mostly) loved Kitty while she was in volume 1 of U. Spider-Man and the fact I’ve read about a 100 issues of volume 1 of U. X-Men. Go with the familiar first and all that. This really leaves me with a lot of questions on simply what happened in the past year’s worth of comics since Peter’s death. The Ultimates doesn’t really give much besides action and the regrouping of a team.
Personally speaking, this seems enjoyable, though would make much more sense if I knew precisely what happened to cause this chaos across America (and slightly if I read Ultiamte Spider-Man last). Out of all of them, U. X-Men was the most confusing not knowing what Kitty had been up to since Fallout. The Ultimates for the most part a fairly simple action comic that was easy to jump onto.
Maybe the saddest disappointment for me was Bendis’ work with Spider-Man. I’ve only glanced at a few previous issues before, so this really was my jumping on point. The Steve/Tony dance about Spider-Man feels rehashed from volume 1 when they argued what to do about Peter. More so, while the character is new, has his own family, and at least mostly new villains it seems, he feels to me like a rehashing of Peter Parker. Having the same problem of villains finding out his identity, having the police and press out to get him… His fighting style and lipping off in the fight seems to even be a rehash. The big difference is this one doesn’t have web shooters (at least for now), and gets TWO extra powers. Yes, two extra powers, yet he seems to fight worse than Parker did despite apparently being able to numb people at touch and freaking invisibility! I’ve also read he’s suppose to be super smart too, just like Peter.
Seriously Bendis/Marvel? I hope I’m wrong, I really do, but it seems you killed off Peter Parker to get a giant media frenzy going over it, just to replace him with a clone who has slightly upgraded powers? What was the point of killing off Peter then, besides making headlines? That matter, why not just resurrect Parker instead, or come up with some BS “Oh, he never died…” line? Maybe have some piece of Venom still out there to make a Parker clone and have him return just like they did with Gwen
Sorry on the rant there folks. The Divided We Fall crossover seems interesting, though probably better if you know recent Ultimate events which I don’t. This Miles kid though… Well, I’ll just keep reading the Divided crossover and really hope I’m wrong about him basically being a Parker clone.
