News: Marvel Comics Drop Prices!!!

This post is very much a response to DC’s news, both in the actual news and the post itself.

Marvel Comics today also announced at least a partial move away from the often criticized $3.99 price for new serialized superhero comics.

While it’d be nice to have that “partial” changed to a “complete”, this is still very good news. Nothing bad here at all. Not like the DC announcement.

What my colleague failed to mention is that DC’s news comes with a price.

As of January, the following titles standard length ongoing titles, previously priced at $3.99 for 32 pages/22 story pages, will be priced at $2.99 with 32 pages/20 story pages

I’ve noticed that page reduction in a few DC comics, like Green Lantern, but now it’ll be across the board. The 22 page length has been around now for decades. Perhaps this is all part of that Silver Age trend?

The bottom line is this: Marvel makes DC look bad yet again.

  1. So let me get this straight: Marvel leaving current $3.99 books at $3.99 for 22 pages is better than DC moving current $3.99 for 22 pages books to $2.99 for 20 pages?

The two extra pages are worth a dollar.

Please note – the reason Marvel’s $2.99 books will be able to keep 22 pages is because they’re still selling other titles for $3.99 with 22 pages.

    Yes, this is much better.

Also, all Marvel has really committed to is not releasing new series with a $3.99 for 22 pages first issue that drops to $2.99 for 22 pages with the second issue.

That sure sounds like they owned DC.

Leaving all those $3.99 standard series is a good thing for the consumer.

  2. Uhh, please, give me a break comics at 2.99 or 3.99 you guys are brainwashed…1.99 yea that makes sense..the artifically induced price gouge that began in the 80’s got out of hand…foil covers that offered no better stories..just a possible collectible worth more than the average comic was all the rage and has ruined the comics industry, like the speculator’s who jumped all over the death of Superman marketing ploy…from 1938 until 1979, comics went from 10 cents to 40..now from 79 to now well, lets see in 30 years they’ve gone up to 3.99!
ad no body wants most of the comics from the last 20 to 25 yrs..go back to real paper, real printing, put them back in the store aisles and charge 1.99…or less..or it’s all over…
