New DCnU Reviews – Week of 11/09

November 10, 2011

I’ve fallen a little behind in my comic book reading.  And as we head into the third issues for the relaunched books, I find myself struggling to find new things to say about most of them.  I find it both challenging and dull to write up the same books month after month.  This week, I thought I’d change things up with some mini-reviews.  No way I can limit myself to one sentence like Ike.  But I’ll keep my rambling to a minimum.

First Teen Titans… Wha Huh?!?

October 17, 2011

So, I’m reading some recapped news from this past weekend’s New York Comic Convention.  Johns is going to screw up Captain Marvel again.  But it’ll be okay because Gary Frank will draw it.  No Secret Six because a so-so Suicide Squad book is filling that role.  Sigh.  But then I cam across this head-scratcher.

Review: Green Lantern #2

October 16, 2011

For me, Johns’ Green Lantern went off the rails some time after the Sinestro Corps War wrapped up.  Since then, Johns has devoted the book almost entirely to fleshing out the various corps he created.  Unfortunately, the concept didn’t hold up to scrutiny.  The more Johns elaborated, the less sense the various corps made.

A new number one issue brought with it a new focus.  And the book is far better for it.

In Defence Of Starfire And Red Hood And The Outlaws

October 4, 2011

Hey, looks like I’m not alone!  Some other people thought the internet over-reacted to Starfire’s portrayal in Red Hood and the Outlaws too!  Scott Lobdell explains Kory’s “memory loss” etc and (what do you know?) it looks like I was right about what he was trying to convey!  That happens so rarely, I feel the need to point it out.  He also confirms that Jason was lying about some things.  Yeah, some people at the DC Forums are going to be eating crow in two weeks when the next issue comes out…

Review: The Savage Hawkman #1

September 29, 2011

I haven’t been fair to The Savage Hawkman.  I’ve been poking fun at the book for months.  There’s something about dubbing Hawkman “savage” and then making him all spikey that is just hysterically desperate.  It’s almost like DC is hoping that readers will mistake Hawkman for Wolverine with wings.  Little did I know when I was cracking those jokes that I was on to something.

Review: Fury of Firestorm #1

September 29, 2011

I know this will be hard to believe, but sometimes I am wrong.  Heck, I’m wrong a lot.  This is easily verified because I go on record here with alarming regularity.  So, when I’m wrong I try to make a point of coming clean.  All this is build-up to me saying: I was wrong about Firestorm.
