Nolanverse to continue?

It’s been popping up all over the place, and while I usually don’t rewrite news I heard off other sites, this one I just couldn’t bring myself to leave alone.  Word has it though that the Nolanverse is to continue into the upcoming Justice League movie!

It seems this story originated with HitFix as both IGN and Movie Pilot link back to it in their respective bits on this piece.  While it is early in the game and things could change, it sounds like things are pretty dead set for actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (JGL for now on, as its a long name) to play Batman in the upcoming Justice League movie.  That it will be a reprisal of his character Robin John Blake, just in case anyone out there was thinking he may just be playing Bruce Wayne this time.  Furthermore, HitFix makes it sound that at least one other actor (actress?) will be reprising their character’s role from the previous Nolan films.  Oh, and that while Nolan himself will probably not be directing, that there most likely will be a new Batman film before the Justice League arrives in 2015 staring JGL.

So browsing over comments (mostly on IGN), I’ve seen a lot of back and forth.  Some say this won’t work for the Nolanverse was, more or less, grounded in reality.  There wasn’t super powers or magical space rings, or other stuff like that so it doesn’t fit.  That Nolan’s Batman wouldn’t fit (and wouldn’t survive even) in a Justice League universe.  I’d like to point back to the fact that the original Batman The Animated Series was pretty grounded, and with a few tweaks that Batman managed perfectly fine in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.  The same could easily be done here, more so if WB does a good job setting JGL into Batman who can show he can deal with more supernatural foes.  I also want to point out that in terms of comics, Batman is often seen in more realistic scenarios in his own titles around Gotham, but he still meshes well when (which is nearly constantly) he is tossed into titles like Justice League or making guest appearances in Superman, etc.

There has also been speculation on how this will go down.  Many are crying out to see him in a Nightwing-esque role first.  Personally, I wouldn’t mind a few flashes, or comments and other Easter Eggs to give that feel he wasn’t always Batman, but I think tossing him into Batman’s suit right away would probably be easier.  I would hope though that if this really does go down that they read up on Dick’s time under the cowl and mold JGL’s Batman after that, instead of just remaking Batman, just with a new name under the mask.  Fans have been wanting to see a good Dick Grayson portrayal (granted, as Nightwing most often) on the big screen, and this would be a great way to do it.  That yet-to-be-named actor/actress reprising their role, well I hope its Gary Oldman.  Jim Gordon makes the most sense to be around, plus he’s a great actor and made a wonderful Gordon.

Bottom line, this could work.  They just can’t bring in another Joel Schumacher.

JGL is denying it. Based on that and Nolan’s comments all through the making of his Batman films, I doubt there is much truth to these rumors.

I think they would do better to start from scratch anyway.

I would love for the JL to have the kind of big screen success Marvel’s Avengers have. But I have very serious doubts. *fingers crosses*

I don’t have the time to search, but I’m pretty sure I saw an interview that while Nolan claimed he was done with it and wanted it to end there, that he did leave things open enough that they could continue the story past where he left it. Though it would be a risky thing if they did, and definitely have to be handled right to really pull it off. Otherwise there would be a LOT of pissed off people out there.

And yeah, while Nolan’s Batman was really good, DC over all has a pretty lousy track record with their live action films. I do hope that however they end up doing the JL movie (assuming it again doesn’t get scrapped) that it does turn out to be a big success.

I sometimes think they should bring in Bruce Timm to handle some of this stuff. He did an amazing job with Batman TAS and later basically the rest of the DCAU, not to mention just about every DC animated film (that for the most part have always been handled well). Seriously, DC does really good with animation, but not live action?

I remember reading something similar from Nolan. But he has always been adamant that his Batman doesn’t work in a world with other super heroes. I don’t see how you use Nolan’s Batman as a springboard for the JLA.

As stated, look at Batman TAS and then when he arrived in Superman’s series, then later the JL cartoon. Batman TAS was pretty well grounded, with the most out of place bit being some enhanced creatures like Man-Bat or Tigress, or otherwise Bane. Far as I know there originally was no plan to be tossing in super heroes. Still, they managed to pull that Batman rather well into “a world with other super heroes.”

I really think it could work, but it does have to be handled right to do so.
