What’s different: There’s two differences that jump right out at me. The first is that Peter Tomasi has come back to the GLC after leaving to launch Guy’s Emerald Warriors book. The second is that John Stewart has taken Kyle’s place on the book. Or, if you prefer, Guy has taken it since technically Guy left and came back.
Either way, Guy and John are front and center. And that’s okay with me. I enjoyed the Guy/Kyle relationship because the two friends really brought out the best in one another. But the Kyle/John relationship wasn’t as interesting to me.
With Kyle and John, both characters are essentially nice guys with artistic backgrounds. In order to make them stand apart, Tony Bedard had to play up John’s military back ground. That tended to make John look like a war monger and Kyle like a bleeding heart pacifist. Neither character was really seen in their best light.
I’m hoping that with Guy back in the mix, John can be himself a little more. Hopefully both characters can shine the way Guy and Kyle did back when they shared the book.
What’s the same: Pretty much everything else. The supporting cast in the background should look familiar to anyone who’s been reading GLC.
Here’s what the solicit has to say:
When deadly conflicts emerge across the universe, it’s up to Guy Gardner, John Stewart and an elite Green Lantern strike force to keep the peace.
I’m not sure if the formation of an “elite GL strike force” constitutes a change or not. But this looks like the GL team book same as before.
Chances for success: Once again, DC’s taking the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to the GL books. GLC was a hit before the relaunch and it should continue to be a hit after the relaunch.
Final Thoughts: Over the last few years while Hal’s book has been off on tangents about the various other corps, GLC has frequently been the better book. If Johns keeps hitting the same note over in GL, I’ll be paying closer attention to GLC.
