What’s different: The team has changed since Generation Lost. Blue Beetle and Captain Atom are out. Batman, Vixen, Guy Gardner, August General in Iron and a “mystery woman” are in. Aside from Batman and Guy, the new additions give the team a diversity which is appropriate for a title that includes the word “International”.
The big question seems to be, who is the mystery woman. Early on, people speculated it was Diana or Donna Troy. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that if it’s an established character, it’s Gypsy. Not sure what this means, but whoever she is, she is not on the cover of the solicit.

Very interesting…
Speaking of differences between the announcement and the solicit check these out. This is the text that came with the original solicit:
A team of internationally-drafted superheroes fight each other and their bureaucratic supervisors as much as they do global crime in JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1 from writer Dan Jurgens and artist Aaron Lopresti. The cover to issue #1 is by Aaron Lopresti.
And this is the solicit itself:
With the growing presence of super beings around the world, the United Nations resolves to create a new group called Justice League International.
Batman, Booster Gold, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, August General in Iron, Fire, Ice, Vixen and Rocket Red are charged with promoting unity and trust – but can they reach that goal without killing each other first?
I’m confused. First, doesn’t the solicit seem a lot more vague than the original announcement? Should that be the other way around?
Also, the solicit mentions the growing presence of super beings around the world. That suggests a pretty big roll back as the DCU has been brimming with super beings for a long time. I really need to see these relaunch timeline!
One final change worth mentioning is that Judd Winick is out and Dan Jurgens is in as writer. Winick really won me over in Generation Lost, but as much as I enjoyed the book it was hardly a classic. I’m more than willing to give Jurgens a try and see how he fares.
What’s the same: Booster Gold is still front and center. And most of the Generation Lost team is still in tact. The basic premise remains unchanged. It remains to be seen whether Jurgens’ tone for the book will stay closer to Generation Lost or go back to a more traditional bwa-ha-ha style for the JLI.
Also, Aaron Lopresti is still on board.
Chances for Success: Good. After a few years of weak teams in the main book, readers were finally ready for the return of the JLI. The time seems right for a full relaunch of the book. And all the ingredients seem to be there.
Final Thoughts: I never thought I’d see the day I’d be so excited for the JLI.
Green Lantern: The New Guardians #1
Maybe the new cover is featuring an invisible Gypsy!
lol
Nice one!
where is Vibe? Vibe should be here for the Hispanic community.
I think Fire is Hispanic. I like the idea of the surviving members of the Detroit-based Justice League of America (Vixen, Gypsy) and the original Justice League International (Booster Gold, Fire, Ice, Guy Gardner) together in one book.
You are correct – Fire is from Brazil if I’m not mistaken.
I hadn’t put together the Detroit-era League connection. Really makes me wonder if that’s Gypsy.
according to DC panel at Fan Expo last weekend, Booster is going to be Canadian. don’t ask me why they felt adding a Canadian to a character that 25 years of backstory and 400 years of future as an American from GOTHAM who played football for Gotham U. is now Canadian…there’s already a Chinese hero, Brazilian, Norwegian, African, AND Russian, all canon, on the team…so why the need to make Booster Canadian and violate canon…in addition to fucking up a fairly iconic uniform into something that makes him look like Blue Kickass.
Yet again one of their once very cool series is relegated to the want-a-be hero line up…Booster Gold is the leader? So now we have a college beach bum expelled, thief that stole his gear and ran away to the past to escape justice, leading the JLI…Really?
Why hello there! I’m just going to be lazy and comment to all your comments on this one portion.
Wonder Woman – I actually like the art, and I think it fits in well with the mood of the comic. You really should give the first issue a look, even if it is flipping through a few pages in the store.

Justice League International – It still is a bit in question if Booster Gold is the same exact person as in the old DC. Mostly though, you really should read the first issue. It gives a pretty darn good reason why Booster Gold was taken in as the “leader” of this team.

Mr. Terrific – You don’t know who Mr. Terrific is? Really? He may be a newer character than Power Girl, but he’s been around a good amount and even had a decent sized role in the old Justice League International cartoon. As for Power Girl, well he does date a Karen that apparently looks like Power Girl, but there isn’t actually word yet if that actually is Power Girl or not. For all intent and purposes, she may not even exist in this new universe that has seemingly cut even a bigger and more important character than Power Girl.

We do have reviews for most of the #1s and a good amount of the #2s now that you can check out, rather than commenting on these pre-relaunch ones.
