Why doesn’t she fly? She’s been flying in the comics since around the 60′s. I guess if she’s going after random punks, then having her be able to fly would be overkill, but does she have the other powers she’s had in the comics? If so, doesn’t that still make her overpowered? If not, then aside from brand recognition, why the heck would they call it Wonder Woman (if it doesn’t resemble what it’s based off of aside from appearance)? Sigh…
From what I understand, the leaked scripts have her unable to fly. While that may seem weird to comic readers, remember that most of general public knows Wonder Woman as Lynda Carter who used an invisible jet to fly. Word is, the jet is in. Flying is out.
I have no problem with this as long as it’s well done. I’d rather have that then cheap flying effects. Remember, we’re on a TV budget. And NBC no less. This thing will be cancelled for sure if it costs too much.
Most of the general public never watched the 1970′s Wonder Woman TV show. A lot of people have been born since then and have liked Wonder Woman from the comics or even just the Justice League and JLU cartoon. If people did watch the show, then if they liked it, then they probably learned something about Wonder Woman from outside the show. It’s been over 30 years since there was a Wonder Woman show, so if people paid attention to the show and were ever interested in Wonder Woman again, then they probably looked her up somewhere and could easily see that she can fly.
NBC did Heroes and while they had problems with writing, the special effects were generally pretty good, including flying.
After looking at Wikipedia, it seems to me that the only similar thing to anything resembling Wonder Woman is the costume and I guess the name. So it seems it is all about brand recognition. At least with Smallville, they kept the general concept of Superman the same. With this, it doesn’t seem like it relates to Wonder Woman at all.
I read a synopsis of a leaked script (so, obviously a lot could change) but other than the flying thing and a few cosmetic changes, it had a lot in common with Rucka’s run on Wonder Woman right down to Veronica Cale as the baddie.
Flying’s not a sticking point for me. I was used to a non-flying Wonder Woman for a long, long time. I think if you polled the general public, most would say they don’t think Wonder Woman flies. Either way, I don’t think most people will get too hung up on the flight thing.
Since you brought up “Heroes” and “Smallville”, I’ll bet you a dozen donuts if Wonder Woman gets picked up it’ll be a much better show than Heroes or Smallville. Those shows are/were crap.
