iZombie #1

May 10, 2010

I was lured into iZombie #1 by two things: 1) a Darwyn Cooke cover and 2) a $1.00 price tag. After picking this book off the shelf I noticed that the author was Chris Roberson, of recent Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love fame, and the immensely talented artist Mike Allred, author and penciller of Madman Atomic Comics. It suffice to say that this book rocketed from slightly piqued interest to full-blown excitement in zero to sixty. I wished I had tempered my expectations though because I ended up slightly disappointed. Read the rest of this entry »

The Unread Canon #6: The Walking Dead: The Heart’s Desire

May 8, 2010

Everyone has a set of entertainment by which they’ll swear, the ones they’ll eventually convince every friend to watch/listen to/read.  Sometimes, those suggestions are echoed time and again all over the place, and even the most jaded, world-weary or dirt-poor fan of the medium has to get curious about just what all that fuss is for.  That’s why I’ve started The Unread Canon, my attempt to experience a great deal more of comics than I already have and take a look at the books that, over the past few years (or, in some cases, decades) have achieved passionate, vocal critical and fan supporters that have nevertheless managed to slip by me and to try and look at how they grew, how they aged, why they work, or why they might not work so well anymore.

House Of Mystery 25

May 8, 2010

Month after month the book I am always the most excited to pick up is  Mathew Sturges’  House of Mystery. This is a very, very special series. Its one long love letter to storytelling. It’s about what stories tell us about human experience and how stories themselves help us relate and make sense of those experiences. I can’t overstate my admiration for Matthew Surges. He doesn’t shy away from tackling those really big ideas about loss and longing, decay and disappointment, about soldiering on after crossing that line you never thought you would. It’s really hard to write about these things without coming off as a dumbass. However, Sturges does so elegantly because he doesn’t pretend to have an overview perspective. The immediacy of our experiences snatches the very prospect of ever gaining that prospective. This is why we need stories. Read the rest of this entry »

Brightest Day #1

May 8, 2010

Here we go…

Let me just begin by saying that I think Brightest Day # 1 is a decent comic. Not good but not terrible either. I liked the Jordan/Ferris/Sinestro team up.  The set up explaining what would possibly bring these characters together post-blackest night is actually pretty effective. My only squabble here is that I hope that this storyline merely serves as a prologue for Deadman now that it seems he will be a real character and not some narrative device. The Green Lantern characters have 3 books being published right now; I really hope they don’t take up to much space in this book as it already feels a bit crowded. I liked the brief Martian Manhunter storyline though I am a little disappointed that his mission to terraform Mars is apparently being postponed.  I also liked Mera’s portrayal (she’s not Aquman in a skirt). I even liked the twist on Aquaman’s power.  Ah but Aquaman is also where everything starts to go to hell. Jonah Hex Trailer

May 2, 2010

I’ve been looking forward to this movie since day one. Jonah Hex is a character who’s always fun to see, and one that is easily adaptable to film. I’m also a fan of Josh Brolin, especially since his kickass year in 2007. He’s a perfect choice for the scarred cowboy. And, of course, the brilliance of John Malkovich’s villainy and Megan Fox as some fiery eye candy are the icing on the cake. It appears, however, that Jonah Hex will not be a success, given that it’ll be competing against Toy Story 3 on June 18. However, as this trailer seems to illustrate, I remain confident that Jonah Hex will, if nothing else, be a a barrel of explosive fun.

Below are some Megan Fox photos from the set. Why? Because Megan Fox is a cool, sexy comic fan, and we need more of those.
