Everyone is always talking about Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern. But people seem to forget about Green Lantern Corps. And that’s a damn shame. This book is so completely satisfying.
In this issue, Emerald Eclipse heats up with three equally compelling plots. First, Sinestro rocks Soranik’s world by explaining her true parentage. Yeah, Kyle’s dating Sinestro’s daughter. Wrap your head around that! Before he leaves to take back control of the Sinestro Corps from Mongul, Sinestro warns his daughter that the Red Lanterns are looking for her.
Meanwhile on Oa, there’s a riot in the Sciencells. Red Lanterns and Sinestro Corps members are tearing the place apart. And on Daxam, Sodam Yat is preparing to free his people from the tyrannical rule of Mongul. Unfortunately, he’s having a power shortage. He’s been on Daxam too long to access his Daxamite powers. And in the middle of his battle with Mongul, Sodam comes to realize that he has been cut off from the power of Ion too.
The issue ends with Sodam seemingly making the ultimate sacrifice to save his people. (Yeah, he’s still alive in Legion of Three Worlds, so it’s not much of a cliffhanger.) And things are set up for the Sinestro/Mongul showdown to come.
The ensemble cast is a real strength for this book. Tomasi does a good job of giving all the Lanterns a unique personality. And since these characters aren’t owned by other books, he has free reign to do whatever he wants with them. It’s one of the reasons this book works better than a book like Justice League.
By now, you’ve probably formed your own opinion of Patrick Gleason as an artist. Personally, I think he’s great. And he’s perfect for a book like Green Lantern Corps with it’s alien cast and bizarre settings. His battle scenes are positively explosive.
As we build up to Blackest Night, the best stuff is going on in Green Lantern Corps. Check it out
Is this really a review/RANT? If you say so, but this and Power Girl are as review-y as you’ve gotten since you returned.
As for GLC, I’m not a fan. I’m not big on Gleason, but he’s ok. Really, it’s the writing. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Tomasi, but a lot of it isn’t true.
This book was fine when Gibbons wrote it, still not the best, but fine. I stayed on a few issues after Sinestro’s war, and man were those books boring!
Here’s the thing, Tomasi writes great villains. Black Adam mini? Mongul scenes? Sinestro scenes? Even that Magog JSA one-shot? All awesome, but heroes is not Tomasi’s thing.
I have friends who read this book, I’ve always kind of wanted to get into it, because GL is awesome right now, but my god this book can be bad! I read some of Sodam Yat’s dialogue out-loud, and my was it terrible!
You raped my mind!
I hate you mother! Blah, blah, blah.
Now that was a RANT!
Respond to my comments on Flash and Lost! I don’t care if you’re working or spending time with loved ones, who cares?!

Okay, all things are subjective… blah blah blah…
You are so wrong about this book I can’t even stand it!
Gleason’s work is stylized and I know that’s not to everyone’s taste. But seriously, who would be better suited to draw a sci-fi book about an alien police force than him? Are there better artists? Sure. But I’d be hard pressed to think of someone better suited for this book.
Look at his Mongul in this issue. Usually, Mongul looks like a jaundiced Darkseid. But Gleason’s Mongul is one scary alien!
And Tomasi’s okay. He’s hit and miss. When he’s good (Black Adam) he’s pretty darn good. When he’s bad (Requiem) he’s pretty bad. Most of his stuff falls in the middle for me. Maybe just above average.

I actually prefer Tomasi to Gibbons. But I’d consider them about equal in quality. The Boodikka arc after Sinestro Corps War was terrible. I dropped it and picked the book back up after that crap was done.

Um, disagree.
Does Tomasi write great villains? Yep. But he does a bang-up job on the heroes too. I love his Guy and Kyle scenes.

GL is awesome? If you say so. I think it’s a good read, but far from awesome. Don’t get caught up in the hype! Don’t drink the Kool-Aid!
And don’t read comic book dialogue out-loud. People will look at you funny. Oh, and it will almost always sound ridiculous.
I think you picked the wrong character to make an example of. No matter who writes him, Sodam Yat comes off like a self-obsessed jerk-off. That’s just his character. Tomasi is actually making me like him a little – which is a pretty impressive feat.
GLC > GL. Believe it!
“GLC > GL. Believe it!”
Wrong! I’m not drinking any kind of aid, I’ve always loved Johns’ GL. It’s one of my favorite books. You know Morrison loves this book too, right? Is he on drugs? Um, nevermind.
Honestly though, GL is better. Is Hal in GLC? Nope, and he’s the kewlist!
Green Lantern saved my life! I had the first hardcover tucked in my coat, and a guy shot me. The hardcover blocked the bullet! Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern saves lives!
GLC sucks! Believe it!
Nah, it’s not bad, just ok. It has its moments, when villains are on the page, but great it is not.
Oh, and people don’t forget about this book. At my LCS, this sells almost as well as GL.
And why won’t you respond to my Flash Rebirth comment?
