Spoiler Review: Secret Invasion #3

By Billy Zonos

Secret Invasion #3 could easily end up the most talked about book of the summer. WOW. I can’t believe I just wrote that. Hey, didn’t Bendis say a while back that issue #3 would have one of, if not the biggest reveal of the entire story? I do recall he did. Hmm… Okay, finally we’re out of the damn Savage Land! Finally! Some real action!

I never noticed how “pimpy” Jarvis is.

YAUS! Bendis addresses the biggest bitch I have with Marvel books!

Teddy tries to reason with his people.

Giant-Man Super Skrull gives Wiccan the high, hard hand.

Who’s a Skrull? I don’t really think this is much of a spoiler, since it’s been hinted and flat out admitted in other titles, but in this issue, Bendis officially outs Spider-Woman as a Skrull. Oh, Jesus. Does that “CRACK” mean Echo’s dead? Please, I pray for death!

Alright, if you don’t want to know the biggest reveal in the entire story so far, do not, I repeat… DO NOT click on the following image links. You’ve been warned.

SPOILER LINK 2

Deep ####ING cover, dudes. See, I tend to believe everything she’s saying here. Why? I think it’s a little late in the Invasion to still be playing head games. I don’t know, I know they said that what happens in this issue would definitely NOT occur in this story, but Bendis and Quesada have lied about key plot points before… hmm, this smells like the real deal and I LOVE it. I’m totally BACK IN, bitches!!!

And finally, your cliffhanger for this segment… where are all the ####ing heroes?

Meh, not as exciting as last issue’s cliffhanger, but it’s enough to get this fanboy revved up for more!

Didn’t we kinda know that, though? Either Cap was a Skrull, or Tony was, and picking Cap would have been too much of a cop-out. There was no point putting Secret Invasion this close to Civil War unless they directly tied into each other.

    !!!!SPOILERS!!!!

yeah, definitely. and we should know by now not to trust the word of the writers and editors. i’m looking forward to the backlash though. it’s gonna be sweet.

but, if the fanboys would sit back and reason it out, this is a very logical plot development. as Bendis has stated repeatedly (and hypocritically i choose to believe this), that everything that’s been happening in the Marvel Universe (the major events) since he took over Avengers is connected. in that way, i don’t see this as a cop-out nor do i see it as invalidating Civil War or anything else involving Stark.

hell, at this point, i would even accept the death of Captain America revealed as a Skrull cover-up. why does that not invalidate Brubaker’s story? because the death of Cap was never about Cap. it’s about an America without Cap and it’s about the redemption of Bucky Barnes. at least, that’s how i choose to see it.

i would have put some of this in the actual review, but it’s filled to the brim with spoilers.

  3. Savant Says:

No, I don’t want it to be true. I want tony to be a DoucheBag and not a Chinbag.

  4. foilball08 Says:

well, since he’s a sleeper agent, he’s just acting the same way the real Tony would act, right? so, the real Tony is still a douchebag! :)

  5. Desiato Says:

I think it could be explained away as the Skrull Queen trying to completely wreck Tony’s mental state and keep him out of the fight. I mean, she is the Skrull Queen. It would be a pretty big hit to morale if she gets struck down. And Tony’s good enough to build something outside of Starktech that could allow him to get his act together, rally the troops and all that good stuff.

With the sleeper agent thing, the Skrull Queen obviously intimates that she had plans for him and those plans were successful. This means that he had to do things that the regular Tony would not necessarily do, or else the need for a sleeper agent wouldn’t be necessary. Or else he would have woken up at some point and known he’s a skrull. Although there is the possibility that he could have been manipulated by the Black Bolt skrull to shift events into place, though that seems somewhat tough considering his whole not speaking thing.

It’s close, but I don’t think it lines up quite right.

Damn you BIlly and your spoilers! I haven’t read the book yet but I couldn’t help myself. I’m not made of stone! Well, this is interesting, as an Iron Man fan, I’ve had to deal with all the bull the character has taken from the majority of fans. Marvel has made Iron Man their whipping boy for god sakes! My only hope was that he was a skrull, but I’ve heard that Bendis wasn’t going to make him a skrull because it would nulify Civil War. So now we have this. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. On the one hand, this would redeem Tony and keep him as the great hero he’s always been. The skrull was the “DoucheBag” not Tony. Perhaps Marvel did this to make America’s current favorite hero with the movie to be a good guy again. Would it be too devastating to the children if they wandered into their local comic shop and found their new favorite hero to be an a hole? On the other hand, if Tony really is a skrull, this kind of steals a great story from Matt Fraction. The story of redemption for Tony. This whole time I figured that Tony would eventually fall from grace, registration would die, and Tony would be left a broken mess. He could then have a great redemption story. I recall Fraction even talking about writing a story somewhat like this. Was this all some elaborate joke and all of Marvel was in on it? Of course, there is always the option that Tony isn’t a skrull. Who knows? Any way you look at it though, I’m glad Bendis added this into the story. Maybe this will redeem him for some of the last couple subpar months of writing for him. Has anyone else noticed that none of his titles save Ultimate Spider-Man have been very good lately. Jessica Drew being a skrull really pissed me off. There were so many damn hints, who didn’t see that coming?

  7. foilball08 Says:

    dude, first… EFF Matt Fraction.

    second…

  8. Bruce Castle Says:

Fine fine they stole a good story from director of SHIELD then. Happy?

  9. Bruce Castle Says:

Plus, what’s your deal with Fraction man, he was once listed as one of your favorite writers. What happened?

  10. Desiato Says:

You know, Billy, you just need to suck it up and read Casanova already. That’s true, unfiltered Fraction injected straight into your adrenal glands. He loses a little in the transition to his Marvel work (which I still like a hell of a lot more often than not), but it’s all about the Casanova.

  11. foilball08 Says:

yeah, i’ve been meaning too. it’s on my Amazon wish list.

  12. SeventhSoldier Says:

Have they explained why the Skrull Queen took the form of Spider-Woman, rather than…well, anyone else? I mean, there are about 100 better people she could have become with ease, but instead she chooses Bendis’ long-time fetish?

  13. Desiato Says:

Spider-Woman has ties to SHIELD, HYDRA and the Avengers. That’s a whole lot of access for an undercover skrull.

  14. SeventhSoldier Says:

Yes, but one skrull doesn’t need that kind of access – and while she has ties to each, last time I checked, she wasn’t actually trusted by either SHIELD or HYDRA, since she was, like, a quintuple agent. There are plenty of heroes that are well-respected and could gain ties to either or already had ties to them – Dum Dum Dugan, actually, was an insanely good choice. Jarvis was a great choice. Spider-Woman was a Bendisthing, and I’ve yet to see a legit in-story reason for her use. But, I’m willing to wait. About half of what Bendis writes is pure awesome, and there’s always the chance that this will fall into that half…but the first issue was more bad Bendis than good Bendis, and I haven’t had the money to pick up #2 yet.

  15. Bruce Castle Says:

Yeah, man am I pissed about Jessica being a skrull. SOOO many hints dropped on that one. Just in the last Mighty avengers issue pre-Secret Invasion, the issue ended with Jessica demonstrating a bunch of power. Black Widow inquires as to why that is and she replies”they haven’t updated my SHIELD file yet.” how much more skrully can you get?! I thought for sure Bendis was misleading us like a good writer would. Nope, she is a skrull!

I’m still hoping that Jessica and Nick Fury have the skrull queen tied up somewhere and Jessica is a double agent again with the skrulls!

    What a twist!

Hey and then the thing with Tony in this issue, how great would it be if that was just her screwing with Tony’s head? Classic!

  16. Pi_3.14159... Says:

Yeah, I am pretty sure Tony isn’t a Skrull. I’ll go over it slightly here.

Tony has become a villain to many people. He has done so much. He is now pretty darn powerful in general and in terms of politically. He controls SHIELD and is pretty darn well-off. He also has split the superhero community in half, and while it is now more 75/25 in favor of Stark, he still split the superhero community. In the comics, it makes perfect sense for him to be a Skrull for all the reasons above and what Spider-Woman mentioned. For us readers, it is a copout because all of those things are invalid. It basically is saying that there is no reason to hate Tony because he didn’t do anything. He’s good again. Just like how I hated that Hulk’s revenge on the Illuminati wasn’t as justified (their engineering wasn’t the reason the planet died, but some crazys on Sakaar) and that I had to forgive Tony for something. That drives me crazy.
Oh, and that is a small part of how I feel about it.

  17. johnamor Says:

I feel unsatisfied after every issue of Secret Invasion, and not in a good “I can’t wait till next month” way.

Alex Zalben said it best in The Stack, “It’s twenty-two pages… but it reads like five.”
